PETALING JAYA: A group of Universiti Sains Malaysia medical students has allegedly been brainwashed into leaving their studies by a Buddhist monk.
Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia lay adviser Chong Hung Wang said the student Buddhist association from the campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, had voiced its concern that around 30 medical students had shown behavioural changes and disinterest in their studies after returning from a trip to Thailand with the monk in August.
“These students were led to believe that patients should not receive medical treatment for their condition as sickness is the result of their karma.
“They are convinced that they should not become doctors as the act of treating patients will interfere with karma,” said Chong.
It is believed that the monk had approached the students in March this year and had gained a following through religious activities conducted off-campus.
The monk also allegedly claimed that he had supernatural power and was able to tell the past and predict the future of the students.
“Compassion is central to Buddhist beliefs. What the monk had propagated about leaving patients to their sickness is wrong.
“We hope to curb the spread of misleading religious beliefs among students by creating better awareness on the true teachings of Buddhism,” said Chong.
The students are said to want to leave the medical school and transfer to other programmes such as nutrition and sports science.
They are also having strained relationships with their family members following their decision to quit medical studies.
It was understood that some of the students were in their third and fourth year of studies.
A university official confirmed that three students had applied to transfer to other courses.
Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Datuk Omar Osman said none of the students had received approval to switch courses and the university viewed the matter of students being influenced by misleading religious teachings seriously.
“We do not want the students to simply switch courses because they are very good students and had worked very hard to gain a place to study medicine,” said Prof Omar.
He added that the university was reaching out to the students through counselling.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak hopes that he will be given a strong mandate in the upcoming 13th general election so he can continue to deliver to the people and make Malaysia a fully developed nation by 2020.
Najib, speaking on the CNBC Conversation interview show hosted by renowned anchor Martin Soong aired earlier on Saturday, said the next five years were very crucial for the government to fulfill commitments and promises made by previous leaders of the nation.
"I'd like to have a strong mandate... Because to achieve our vision of a fully developed nation by 2020, the next five years would be very crucial. Crucial, because you're talking about the last lap.
"You're talking about going down the stretch and this is the most critical part because we really have to deliver," he said, responding to a question on how important the upcoming election was for him, and the importance of receiving a fresh mandate to transform Malaysia into a developed country by 2020.
He said the transformation was a firm commitment made by then-prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the early 90s, with Najib's predecessor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi implementing part of it.
The Pekan MP said it was now his turn to deliver to the people.
Najib, who is also Finance Minister, also said that achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth without upsetting the political landscape too much was one the challenges Malaysia faced in becoming a developed nation.
However, he stressed that the key to make Malaysian society more equitable was growth, so that income could be redistributed back to the people.
"Without growth, it will be a lose-lose situation. So if we get five to six per cent within the time frame, then we will able to at the same time, ensure a more fair and equitable distribution of wealth in this country.
In the 30-minute interview, Najib said the move for growth was working and that the numbers were looking more positive in terms of Bumiputera participation.
"But it's not just about the equity numbers. We must also make sure that there is a fair distribution of income between the different levels of income groups in this country," he said. - Bernama

Kidnappers nabbed, RM350,000 ransom recovered

ALOR SETAR: Five men who allegedly kidnapped the teenage son of a skin specialist on Tuesday, spent merely RM300 out of RM350,000 ransom as they were promptly arrested by the police.
Following the release of the 13-year-old schoolboy, the police detained two men here on Thursday night, and the rest at a temple in Sungai Petani, the following night.
Kedah police chief Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said Sunday, RM349,700 of the ransom ransom was seized from the suspects, including a Myanmar national.
"This indicates that quick action by the police to nab the suspects gave them little time to spend more of the ransom money," he said, adding that the kidnap case was solved within 48 hours.
He said the suspects were remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 3 of the Kidnap Act 1961, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
Ahmad said the victim was kidnapped while returning home from a tuition class about 10pm in Jalan Kampung Pisang on Sept 25.
"An hour later, the teenager's family received a call from a man, demanding for RM500,000 ransom to secure his release. Following negotiations, the ransom was reduced to RM350,000," he told reporters here.
He said the next day, the family lodged a police report and paid the ransom.
